Posture is important for achieving overall body wellness. Bad posture can cause chronic muscle tension as the weight of your head and upper body is supported by muscles instead of bones. This imbalance effects spinal alignments and the overall configuration of your body. Improper posture and low back pain may be corrected by training your body when you sit or stand.

Sit properly by keeping your feet on the floor with ankles in front of your knees and a small gap between the back of your knees and the front of you seat. Keep knees at or below the level of your hips and relax your shoulders while keeping your forearms parallel to the ground. Dont cross your legs or sit for long periods of time.

Stand correctly by bearing most of your body weight on the balls of your feet. Keep your knees slightly bent and legs shoulder width apart. Let arms hand naturally to the side of your body, stand tall with your shoulders pulled back and tuck in your stomach. Your head should be level and if you are standing for a long time, shift your weight from your toes to your heels or from one foot to another.

A good nights sleep should begin by selecting a mattress that is right for you. A firm mattress may provide more support for your body. Always sleep with a pillow; you can purchase special pillows that may help with spinal alignments and back pain relief. If you are a side sleeper than put a pillow between your legs to keep your spine aligned.

By consciously being aware of the proper way to sit, stand and sleep you may be able to gradually correct the problem and eliminate some of the pain that is being caused by bad habits such as slouching. Our Lake Worth chiropractor can also assist in back pain relief from low back pain to pain in the upper extremities of the back and neck that stems from bad posture.
