Running boasts many health benefits and can help keep you active and vital long after many of your contemporaries have settled into a sedentary lifestyle. Unfortunately, it also presents its own risks for injuries and chronic pain conditions. Let us look at how rehabilitation through chiropractic care and other natural techniques can help you minimize these issues.

Running puts extra strain on the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spinal column, hips, knees, ankles and feet -- all areas that absorb shock and take a certain amount of punishment with each step. If your posture, gait and spinal alignment are off-balance for any reason, this additional stress can lead to overuse injuries. Iliotibial band syndrome, or ITBFS, is a common example. This type of "runner's knee" occurs when the iliotibial band that runs along the knee joint rubs against the femur. Improper hip balance or foot balance can cause or aggravate this condition.

An even more common form of "runner's knee" is patellofemoral pain syndrome, in which a dislocated kneecap rubs against the femoral groove adjoining the thigh, creating pain, tenderness and a feeling of weakness in the knee. Plantar fasciitis, a painful inflammation of the foot's connective tissue, may also result from poor arch support or spinal misalignment. Running with a spinal misalignment, disc problem or unbalanced gait can even leave you with serious low back pain.
