On January of 2013, a new auto accident insurance lawendorsed by Governor Rick Scott was passed. All insured motorists in the stateof Florida including Lake Worth, Palm Springs, Greenacres, Lantana and WestPalm Beach are affected by this change.
This new Personal Injury Protection (PIP) law may limit theamount of coverage from a mandatory 10,000 dollars to 2,500 dollars depending onwhether or not an emergency medical condition has been determined by a medicalphysician.
Here is a list of changes you should become familiar with:
1. The injured must seek medical treatment within 14 days of an auto accident. Waiting longer will result in loss of medicalcoverage from the insurance company.
2. Initial treatment must be provided by a licensed andapproved medical professional such as a Chiropractic Physician, Medical Doctoror Osteopathic Physician.
3. Follow-up care must be consistent with medical diagnosisfrom the patients initial medical visit. ALL injuries must be addressed on theinitial visit or the insurance may deny coverage.
4. Treatment following an auto accident must be supervised, ordered or prescribed by a licensed Chiropractic Physician, Medical Doctor, OsteopathicPhysician or an ARNP.
5. To receive thefull benefit amount of 10,000 dollars, a medical professional must determinethat the patients condition is an emergency medical condition. If an emergencymedical condition has not been determined, medical coverage would be limited to2,500 dollars. The insured pays for 10000 dollars of PIP insurance coverage andmay only be eligible for 2,500 dollars. Massage and Acupuncture have beenexcluded as treatment options under the new PIP laws.
